Winter Tires 101

Why is it important to have winter tires?

Winter specific tire compound 1) help improve traction in cold temperatures, snow, wet, or icy conditions; and 2) reduce braking distance by as much as 25%.

Winter Tires are extremely important. It’s better to play it safe than regret not having it when you need it. Driving extra slow or braking extra early don’t cut it when your tires are not gripping.

Which tires do I need?

All winter tires will have a three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the tire. Throughout Oct 1st to Apr. 30th, winter tires are required on most routes in BC. For roads that are plowed regularly, it’s best to choose a tire designed for ice versus snow, otherwise, a more aggressive tread pattern is recommended for roads that aren’t plowed regularly.

Is it better to have a winter wheel setup (tires & rims)?

Everyone’s needs are different but you should consider the following:

  1. Each time the technician removes the tires from the rim, it poses a risk of damaging the tire and its durability
  2. Removing and reinstalling a tire that are not on the rim will take more time and costs more
  3. The upfront cost of purchasing a winter wheel setup will be more than just tires; however, swapping between winter wheel set and regular set will save you time and money later.
